Network-attached storage (NAS) is hard disk storage that is set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the department computer that is serving applications to a network’s workstation users. By removing storage access and its management from the department server, both application programming and files can be served faster because they are not competing for the same processor resources. The network-attached storage device is attached to a local area network (typically, an Ethernet network) and assigned an IP address. File requests are mapped by the main server to the NAS file server.

Like traditional file servers, NAS follows a client/server design. A single hardware device, often called the NAS box or NAS head, acts as the interface between the NAS and network clients. These NAS devices require no monitor, keyboard or mouse. They generally run an embedded operating system rather than a full-featured NOS. One or more disk (and possibly tape) drives can be attached to many NAS systems to increase total capacity. Clients always connect to the NAS head, however, rather than to the individual storage devices.

Network-attached storage consists of hard disk storage, including multi-disk RAID systems, and software for configuring and mapping file locations to the network-attached device. Network-attached storage can be a step toward and included as part of a more sophisticated storage system known as a storage area network (SAN).

NAS software can usually handle a number of network protocols, including Microsoft’s Internetwork Packet Exchange and NetBEUI, Novell’s Netware Internetwork Packet Exchange, and Sun Microsystems’ Network File System. Configuration, including the setting of user access priorities, is usually possible using a Web browser.

If you have spent any time at all working with a computer, then chances are good that you have used a floppy disk at some point. The floppy disk drive (FDD) was the primary means of adding data to a computer until the CD-ROM drive became popular. In fact, FDDs have been a key component of most personal computers for more than 20 years.

Basically, a floppy disk drive reads and writes data to a small, circular piece of metal-coated plastic similar to audio cassette tape. In this article, you will learn more about what is inside a floppy disk drive and how it works. You will also find out some cool facts about FDDs.

The floppy disk drive (FDD) was invented at IBM by Alan Shugart in 1967. The first floppy drives used an 8-inch disk (later called a “diskette” as it got smaller), which evolved into the 5.25-inch disk that was used on the first IBM Personal Computer in August 1981. The 5.25-inch disk held 360 kilobytes compared to the 1.44 megabyte capacity of today’s 3.5-inch diskette.

The 5.25-inch disks were dubbed “floppy” because the diskette packaging was a very flexible plastic envelope, unlike the rigid case used to hold today’s 3.5-inch diskettes.

Parts of a Floppy Disk Drive:

Disk: Also called diskette. The common size is 3.5 inches.

Drive: The electromechanical device that reads and writes floppy disks.

Tracks: Concentric ring of data on a side of a disk.

Sectors: A subset of a track, similar to wedge or a slice of pie.

The Qnap TS-219P is a NAS enclosure with two bays which can hold up to two 2.5 or 3.5-inch SATA drives with a maximum capacity of 2 TB. The drives, which are hot-swappable, can be set up as a Jbod array (meaning you can share the total maximum capacity of both disks), a RAID 0 array (data split across both disks) or RAID 1 (the second disk mirrors the first). The NAS supports 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA hard drives, and is featured with excellent hardware design for storage expansion, outstanding data access performance, high system reliability, and numerous powerful software applications. The TS-219P is the top-class model in the current home and SOHO NAS market.

The hardware include is a 1.2 GHz Marvell processor with 512 MB of RAM. Behind the enclosure, there is a Gigabit ethernet port, but also two eSATA ports and two USB 2.0 ports–as well as a third on the front. That makes it easy to connect an external hard drive or a USB key. The USB ports can also be used to share a print or to manage a UPS.

The Qnap TS-219P is a powerful and extremely useful little NAS box, it won’t take up much space or make a lot of noise, but it will allow you to do things over your network that you’ve only dreamed of. It’s certainly much more than a backup device… The interface is very nicely down and easy to navigate for even the most novice of user. Anyone can have the Qnap TS-219P up and running on their network in a matter of minutes really.

A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible (“floppy”) magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell. Originally announced as the “Type 1 Diskette” by IBM in 1973, the industry then adopted the terms “floppy disk” or “floppy”.

Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the initials of which should not be confused with “fixed disk drive”, which is another term for a (nonremovable) type of hard disk drive. Invented by the American information technology company IBM, floppy disks in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms enjoyed nearly three decades as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have now been superseded by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs, and memory cards.

If you have an old floppy drive that you would like to use through your universal serial bus (USB) ports on your computer, you will need an appropriate adapter cable. These cables enable Serial ATA (SATA) or integrated drive electronics (IDE) devices to be accessed through USB ports. They can be obtained from many electronic components supply stores. An old floppy drive is likely to be an IDE device, so be sure the cable you purchase has an IDE adapter. Once you acquire the adapter, using your floppy drive through a USB port is a cinch.

For business users, QNAP has equipped the TS-459 with a ton of applications built in such as file server, FTP server, printer server, web server, and Windows AD support. The dual-core Intel Atom also helps to expand the the number of iSCSI targets the TS-459 Pro supports (256, up from 8 on the TS-419P).

The TS-459 Pro is the powerful 4-bay network attached storage (NAS ) server, which is designed to provide an affordable and easy-to-management solution with iSCSI service for virtualized and clustered environment. The TS-459 Pro also offers versatile business applications to maximize the efficiency of the data center in the business environment. It uses the next generation Intel Atom D510 1.66 GHz Dual-Core processor and also has double the RAM, 1 GB DDRII RAM to deliver up to 100 MB/sec RAID 5 reads.

The TS-459 is truly a feature rich and powerful NAS box, you can do most anything with it from running a web server and FTP to sharing multi-media on your network, and it can even be used in conjunction with IP cameras for a surveillance system. The TS-459 can also utilize QPackages that allow you to install all sorts of apps like WordPress, Joomla and many other things for a variety of uses making it much more than just a vanilla NAS box.

The TS-459 comes packaged very well. Included with it are two Ethernet cables, power cord, screws, keys, user manual and driver/software disc. One interesting thing about the TS-459 is that there is no power brick style power supply, it just plugs straight into the NAS box for power.

NAS is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients. These systems add data storage to a computer network and are an interesting alternative to traditional file servers.

The idea behind NAS is simple: a device, usually without any monitor, mouse, or keyboard, is connected to two things: electrical power and your network. A set of configuration screens, typically accessed through a Web browser, helps set you up with an IP address and user accounts. Within a few minutes, you have gigabytes or terabytes of additional storage capacity.

NAS devices can take the shape of anything from a device hardly bigger than a 4 – port hub to units designed to fit into 19-inch racks and large cabinet systems.

The nice thing about NAS units is their ability to mimic “real” Windows NT/2000, UNIX or Macintosh servers. This means that your users don’t have to do anything differently when they want to access them. As far as they are concerned, the NAS unit is just another server out on the network on which to save or from which to retrieve their important files. There are three basic kinds of NAS servers. First are the simple appliances that typically hold 20 to 80GB of data. These are mainly designed for small or remote offices or workgroups. These servers have minimal setup tools to reduce potential confusion, and are geared toward being shared by fewer than twelve people. These devices generally have one or two disk drives inside them and sell for less than $1,000. Next are devices geared more towards medium-sized work groups or offices, to either replace existing network servers or to augment their storage capabilities. Finally, there are more enterprise – level units, from EMC and Auspex.

The Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) is a device that controls internal 3.5/5.25 inch floppy disk drive devices on desktop x86 systems. There are a range of chips that have been produced for this function which include: 8272A, 82078, 82077SL & 82077AA.

Each ribbon cable for floppy drives can hold up 2 drives. One floppy controller chip can control 2 floppy cables, for a total of 4 drives. It is theoretically possible for a system to have more than one controller chip, but you will not find any existing systems with more than one. If a system were to have more than one floppy controller, the second controller would be found at a base IO port address of 0×370.

The floppy controller is programmed through 9 registers, which can be accessed through IO ports 0x3F0 through 0x3F7 (excluding 0x3F6). As usual on the PC architecture, some of those IO ports access different controller registers depending on whether you read from or write to them. Use standard “outb” and “inb” commands to access the registers.

All commands, parameter information, result codes, and disk data transfers go through the FIFO port. MSR contains the “busy” bit flags that must be checked before reading/writing each byte through the FIFO. DOR controls the floppy drive motors, floppy drive “selection”, and resets.

The FDC has three I/O ports. These are:

Data port

Main status register (MSR)

Control port

The first two reside inside the FDC IC while the Control port is in the external hardware.
